Changing a burned out light bulb can be a daunting task, especially when it’s for an uncommon use or fixture. The good news is we can make that process a bit easier. Since top considerations for choosing a new bulb include fixture, technology, wattage and color temperature, answering these four questions will give you a strong foundation for your search.

1. What fixture is your light bulb for?
Unsurprisingly, certain light bulbs are more common in certain kinds of fixtures than others. Was your old light bulb in a ceiling fan fixture or the vanity light in your bathroom? Was it used for a special application, such as in your car or refrigerator? Was it used outdoors or perhaps in your office? You get the idea. After unscrewing your burned-out bulb and examining it for relevant information such as brand name or wattage, you’ll need to consider its application and check the requirements of the fixture.

You also need to make sure your new bulb has the right bulb shape and base type. Sometimes, all you have is your old light bulb to guide you—take it with you to the store or have it out when browsing your options online. Popular household bulb shapes include A19, decorative chandelier, and outdoor reflector (PARMR, and BR-type bulbs), but here is a longer list of common household bulb shapes if none of these fit the bill.

Moreover, having the right base type on your bulb ensures it will screw into your fixture properly. Typically, you’ll need an A19 with a medium base for a ceiling fan light fixture or lamp, or a chandelier bulb with a candelabra base for a chandelier or wall sconce. 2. What light bulb technology should you use?
Light bulbs of all shapes and sizes come in a variety of different technologies. For example, there are LED A19 bulbs, CFL A19 bulbs, incandescent A19 bulbs, etc. Some technologies are more energy-efficient than others, and some are better suited for certain purposes. The five main types of lighting technology are incandescent, fluorescent, LED, halogen, and HID.

HID: HID (high-intensity discharge lamps) lights emit even brighter, further-reaching light  than halogens and are usually used in industrial or specialty applications such as outdoor street lighting, parking garages, stadiums, warehouses, and automotive headlights.

3. What wattage do you need?
Again, if the wattage you need isn’t specified on your old bulb, you can always check your fixture. Fixtures such as ceiling fans, lamps, or general overhead lights are rated to accept a certain wattage, which you can look up on the manufacturer’s website if it’s not printed on the fixture. The most common wattage used for bulbs in typical household applications is 60 watts—when replacing an incandescent bulb with another incandescent.

When replacing an incandescent with an LED or CFL bulb, however, they will typically be labeled in terms of wattage equivalence; “60W equal” bulbs, for example. These 60W equal bulbs may use as little as 8 watts to actually operate—this rating simply means that they produce as much light as 60W incandescents and will work fine in fixtures rated to accept 60 watts.

NOTE: If you’d like brighter light from your fixture, you may have to ignore the wattage equivalent rating and pay attention to lumens (which are the direct measurement of brightness—not watts, which measure power requirements) instead. 4. Do you want bright, white light or comfortable, orange light?
The color of light, ranging from the orange glow of a candle to the bright blue light of the sun, is called color temperature. Color temperature has nothing to do with physical heat. The color temperature scale is even backwards from an ambient temperature scale: the lower the color temperature, the warmer (or more orange) the light is; the higher the color temperature, the cooler (or more blue) the light is. Measured in degrees Kelvin, most lights have color temperatures between 2700K and 6500K, and the particular color temperature you need depends on your room and application. Now let's do some detailed analysis to compare LED and fluorescent lighting, and there is no doubt that LED will defeat fluorescent lighting.

First of all, LED lighting is more energy efficient than fluorescent lighting due to the high efficacy of LEDs. LEDs for interior lighting have already broken the efficacy record of 100 lumen per watt, while fluorescent lighting only has an efficacy of around 60 lumen per watt. LED has a power factor of 0.9, which means most of the power is converted into light, but when fluorescent lighting works, a huge amount of power is converted into heat which will be dispersed finally. LED lighting consumes only 30% energy as fluorescent lighting to deliver the same lumen output.

Secondly, Flexible LED lighting has a much longer lifetime than fluorescent lighting since LED lighting is solid state lighting which more stable and reliable. LEDs can last over 50,000 hours which means 17 years under normal use. Whereas fluorescent lighting only has a lifetime of around 5,000 hours, which means you have to replace them as often. Using LED lighting can greatly save your expenses which are used to buy new light bulbs and pay for the labor.

In addition, the light quality of LED down lighting is much better than that of fluorescent lighting. Fluorescent lighting is always flickering when start up, while LED lighting is quick to start up without any flickering. We all know and have seen or live with flickering fluorescent tubes on a daily basis. They've actually been proven to cause headaches, due to the micro-pulse wavelength they emit. Using LEDs can reduce workplace strain, headaches, and increase efficiency, with workers at top performance, minus the migraines from CFLs!

When on for hours a day, for a long period of time, fluorescent lighting may have some hot spots due to heat it generates, which does not happen to LED lighting. These hotspots cause the rest of the light to become dimmer, and quickly results in a dead CFL tube, a perfect reason to switch to LED T8 Tubes or T5 tubes, depending on the socket size. Fluorescent lighting / CFL pigtails can cause eyestrain, but LED lighting does not as a result of its uniform and unparalleled balanced light output, and does not flicker or emit a low pitched humming like the earlier fluorescent technology. However, think about the long term energy savings, and savings you will get from not needing to replace the lights, for up to 5 or 10 times as long, depending if the light replaced was incandescent or fluorescent. Either way, the more high energy halogen, incandescent, or fluorescent lights you replace, the more money you will save every month. Some towns and states even have a tax-rebate / government program that pays you / reimburses you for energy saving LED bulbs. Check with your local town, half the bill could be on them due to recent energy grants and programs setup by President Obama in early 2010. Over the full life of the LED fixture / tube or bulb, the money saved by using LED lighting will be enormous? Why's that? When factoring in the true price of lighting, you must include all 3 variables: Upfront costs, maintenance costs, and a maintenance main to routinely replace your lights.. that is of course, if you aren't using LEDs!

In my opinion, LED lighting will replace fluorescent lighting since it meets the requirements of sustainable development, incandescent lighting, due to energy savings and durability, and halogen lighting due to the heat, safety factor, and of course energy usage! Replace your money hungry lights at the home, office, hotel, casino, college, dorm, or even your RV to save battery power! Go green and truly be eco-friendly with LED lighting, and don't forget to PROPERLY dispose of CFL lights in a sealed garbage bag (or two, or your garbage mans health).

Colour Temperature and Colour Rendering Index in Australia

This guide will explain colour temperature and Colour Rendering Index (CRI), which will help you to choose which energy saver lamps or fluorescent tube lamps to buy.

Colour Temperature

This is a measure of how warm or cool the light given off by a fluorescent lamp appears, with warmer colours having a yellowish tinge and colder colours appearing a lot brighter. What confuses some people is that the warmer a colour is, the colder its colour temperature is. This is because something which is red hot is actually colder than something which is white hot (which makes sense when you think about it) but psychologically the bluish white object seems colder as we associate blue with cold.

Colour temperature is measured on the Kelvin (K) scale, which uses the same units as the Celsius or Centigrade scale, but starts at absolute zero (-273 degrees Celsius). It is called colour temperature as is derived from the colours of light emited when a body of carbon is heated to different temperatures. If you were to heat it to 2700K it would glow yellowish-white, and if you heated it to 5400-6500K it would glow bluish-white.

A warm white lamp similar to an incandescent bulb, including halogen, has a colour temperature of around 2700K, and gives off light with a yellowish quality, while 5000-6500K represents a bluish white colour as shown in the colour guide.

The most common colour temperatures available are as follows:

2700K is classed as extra warm white and is common in many of the lamps available from supermarkets, DIY sheds and the free ones given away by energy companies. However, this colour has done more damage to the use of CFLi’s due to many retailers selling inferior quality items causing headaches, poor lighting and in some cases short life. At the Light Online Australia we only stock reputable quality lamps with this rating.

3000K is still classified as warm white, but is slightly colder than 2700K and mimics a halogen lamp. Therefore 3000K fluorescent tubes are often used in kitchens which are decorated in white or silver metallic to give a clean feel. We have Deluxlite branded compact fluorescents in 3000k.
3500K is bulk standard white and has been around for over 70 years. Popular in warehouses, corridors, offices and many other applications where people are situated. Half our warehouse is in white and the other half in Daylight. It looks strange but it’s used in many editorials.
4000K is classed as cool white that is often used in office buildings, and you might consider it for a home office to give a more professional feel. It will also appear brighter that White and warm white.
5400-6500K lamps are often branded as 'daylight lamps', having a similar quality of light to a hot summer's day with a blue sky. This is a very cold light that would not usually be used in the home, but may be helpful for people with Seasonal Affective Disorder. (SAD)

Colour Rendering Index (CRI)

This is a measure of how realistic colours look when they are lit by a lamp. A standard incandescent bulb scores 100% as it produces the full spectrum of colours and therefore has perfect colour rendering.

Fluorescent lamps have a lower CRI because they do not produce the full spectrum of light. Good quality 'triphosphorfluorescents' use three phosphors to give off red, green and blue light. This tricks your eyes into thinking they are seeing white, in much the same way as a TV screen works. If you want colours to look good, you need to choose a fluorescent lamp with a CRI of 80% or higher - this will be fine for everyday use. Specialist fluorescents are available with a CRI higher than 90%, but these are slightly less efficient and are usually only used by professionals such as graphic designers or artists.

You should avoid buying tubes for the home if they do not have a CRI rating of at least 80%, as they may be cheap tubes intended for office buildings. These only use a single phosphor that leaves large gaps in the spectrum of light. They have a CRI as low as 50%, which tends to give people's skin a sickly look, and colours just don't look right. They are also now banned under EU regulations. These give energy saver bulbs a bad name, but are greatly out-performed by modern, household fluorescents with a high CRI.

Perceptions of fluorescent energy saver lamps

People often complain that they do not like fluorescent energy saving lamps because of the colour they produce. This is because they buy discounted 2700k lamps from their supermarket or receive free energy saving lamps from their Energy Company; free ones that are paid for out of their energy bill! These 'free' lamps help energy companies hit their 'carbon reduction targets' but of course don’t even have to be installed! Nothing in life is free.
